Wrought iron chest with a wooden and cloth core. France. Gothic. Circa 1500.
Decorated with Gothic tracery. These chests, which were used to store money, offered a great deal of protection. The rings on the sides meant that they could be fastened inside a larger chest, or carried over the shoulder.
There are two very similar examples kept at the Bargello National Museum and the Episcopal Museum in Vic. Photos of them appear in the catalogue of the exhibition "Voyager au Moyen Âge", which took place at the Cluny Museum in Paris, Oct. 2014 - Feb. 2015.
11,5 x 17 x 11,5 cm.
