Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Polychrome and gilt wooden carving. Gothic. Late 15th century.
Sculpture attributed to Alejo de Vahia due to its exceptional fineness both in the hands and the expression on the face as well as the carving of the rich clothing. This carving can be linked to the figure of the prelate in the Bolaños de Campo altarpiece, on show at the Diocesan Museum of Valladolid, as well as the Breastfeeding Virgin at the Santiago church in Valladolid.
Depicted standing on the head of the Emperor Maxentius, who she refused to marry when he asked her to renounce her faith, she is crowned and dressed in aristocratic clothing and, as in the legend, is very beautiful. The sculpting work is very fine. Recently restored and treated for woodworm.
Height: 80.5 cm.
